Business philosophy

Mirror and FireplaceI believe wood is a fundamental material in the existence of humans, we have been using it for centuries for a range of products and uses. The phrase ‘touch wood’ came around due to the energy of wood; at craft markets if I had a pound for every time somebody touched my products I would be very very wealthy!! For me, wood is a noble, tactile, robust and calming energy, roots contain subterranean energy and most importantly wood transforms a home or a garden. Wood is a direct link to Mother Nature for human beings, even when wood is cut it remains alive; growth is the only thing that really dies.

I have always tried to be as environmentally friendly as possible. All of my driftwood is collected locally and branches are picked up whilst walking. All of my crafts last year were created from off cuts from a company I worked for in the South of England, once this wood ran out I began to look for local alternatives, and have now found a great local supplier. I finish all of the wood with natural dyes, waxes and oils, however if a client wishes a table, for example to be finished with a varnish, I do it as the clients needs are crucial to the success of the business, but when I have the opportunity to choose I have more freedom, many clients give me artistic licence.

Background to the business

I am a qualified cabinet maker and have a lifetime connection to wood and nature, I was making dens from a very young age! I have travelled a lot and worked with many different timbers and carpenters. In the last year I have further developed my own unique style which is present on a wide variety of commissions and crafts. I continue using as many eco friendly products and production methods as I can.

I have recently invested in bigger tools and a bigger van enabling me to take on larger scale commissions and work to a very high standard.

I have been in business since January 2007 and have built up a substantial and loyal client base. I have thoroughly enjoyed transforming my love of wood into a business reality. I moved to Scotland in November 2006 and have settled into life here very well. It was a slow start but things are looking more positive for the year ahead. I feel that I offer an innovative business and have lots of ideas and plans for the years to come. I have recently moved to Dalavich where I have the space and set up to really excel in my business.
